Most of what happened over the next hour or two was a disjointed haze. We decided to turn off the movie—partly because Chunk kept cackling “Yippee-ki-yay, motherfucker!”—but mostly because sitting around and staring at the TV seemed like the most boring thing ever right then.

Sally and I had a bit more wine—not nearly as much as Chunk had guzzled, but enough to keep us feeling silly. Sally put on a Led Zeppelin cassette tape and cranked the volume.

At one point Chunk sneaked outside with Sally’s cigarette and lighter. We only caught him because we heard him coughing up his lungs, which had been loud enough to hear above the music.

Sally flicked on the light switch for the porch, bathing him in a guilty white radiance. He was doubled over and hocking a loogie, holding the cigarette away from him, maybe hoping for someone else to take it.

Sally snatched it from his fingers, and he blurted, “I gotta ralph…”

And so he did—right into the swimming pool.
